PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a scanning timing detector in which an erroneous detection of the scanning timing of a light beam is suppressed even when the light beam has high intensity. SOLUTION: The scanning timing detector 1 is provided with a light receiving element 10, a first current voltage conversion circuit 21, a second current voltage conversion circuit 22, a clamp circuit 30 and a comparison circuit 40. The light receiving element 10 includes a first photodiode PD1 and a second photodiode PD2 the respective light receiving areas of which are close to each other. The photodiodes PD1 and PD2 are arranged along a light beam scanning line L. The light beams are scanned in the order of the first photodiode PD1 and the second photodiode PD2. The width W1 of the light receiving area of the first photodiode PD1 along the light beam scanning line L is wider than the width W2 of the light receiving area of the second photodiode PD2 along the light beam scanning line L.
