The system has sensors arranged as opto-electronic sensors (11, 13) for reading bar codes (45, 47) and producing corresponding read data. Power supply units are provided, where each of the sensors is attached to each of the power supply units. System interfaces are provided for outputting output data to a superordinate system control unit. A bus controller has a monitoring circuit verifying whether one of data buses is defective. An independent claim is also included for a method for detecting and tracing optical codes at objects.
