A cell incubator enabling creation of a superimposition image by capturing an image of cells and a fluorescence image and superimpose the cell image on the fluorescence image with high accuracy. A cell incubator (10) having an observation section (70) for observing the cultivation process of cells comprises a focus detecting section (110) for detecting the focal position of an imaging optical system (71) of the observing section (70), an optimum focus judging section (120) for capturing images while moving stepwise by a small movement distance an imaging optical system (71) from the detected focus position along the optical axis and judging the optimum best focus position on the basis of the images, and a fluorescence observing section (130) for capturing a fluorescence image of the cells by moving the imaging optical system (71) to the detected optimum best focus position.
