PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a means for retrieving a similar avator between users, and for utilizing it for the generation of the avator and the formation of a community. SOLUTION: This method for retrieving character data stored in association with the user ID of a user by a server connected through a communication network to a plurality of user terminals, includes: a step for reading an avator table in which the ID of item data and the user ID are stored in association with each other from an avator DB; a step for extracting the ID of the item data commonly used between a plurality of users from the avator table, and for calculating the similarity of the character data between the plurality of users; a step for storing the similarity in a similarity table indicating the similarity of the character data between the users; a step for determining whether or not the similarity is a predetermined threshold or higher; and a step for transmitting the character data as the retrieval result according to the determination.
