The system (10) has a side gas bag (12) including inflatable chambers (28, 34), where the inflatable chamber (28) lies in an area of a side window (22) of a vehicle. The chamber (28) lies in a head area of occupant (38, 40) in an inflated condition of the side gas bag, and the chamber (34) lies in a shoulder area of the occupant in the inflated condition of the side gas bag, where different internal pressures are obtained in the chambers in the inflated condition of the bag. The chamber extends underneath a door`s armrest (36) of the vehicle.
