<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a functional film and a functional transfer film which bear a functional thin film such as VO<SB>2</SB>film requiring high temperature heating in a film forming process on a polymer supporting film. <P>SOLUTION: In the functional film manufacturing method, first, an intermediate layer thin film 2 made up of a heat-resistant water-soluble substance, is formed on a general-purpose heat-resistant base 1, using a heat-resistant water-soluble substance having high temperature resistance and water solubility at the same time. Further, the functional thin film etc. are formed on the intermediate layer thin film 2, and a functional layer etc. are released from the base by dissolving the water-soluble intermediate layer thin film with the help of a medium containing water (water vapor or a solution). After that, a supporting film 5 is made to bear the functional layer through an adhesive layer, a release layer, etc. Thus, a functional thin film material is prepared and also, a fine particle, film, transfer film, etc. are manufactured by this method. Besides, their finished products can be obtained.
