Floor covering is produced by coating a layer of textile fabric on both sides with a synthetic adhesive, bonding a layer of foam-like porous and elastic material to one side of the coated fabric and applying to the other side thereof a layer of upstanding fibres or hairs by means of a continuous electro-static flocking operation known per se, both the adhesive and the foamlike material being such as to dry or set at room temperature. The layer of textile material may be loosely woven and may be first embedded between two layers of filling material which also is such as to set at room temperature, and thereafter applying to opposite sides, respectively, of the fabric so treated, the coatings of adhesive and foam-like material. The two layers of filling material, e.g. latex, may be applied so as to show perfectly continuous and smooth surfaces, and the layer of upstanding hairs may be applied so that the free ends of these hairs show a smooth surface, being approximately all in the same plane. One of the two layers of filling material may be applied so as to show a perfectly smooth outer surface, a layer of adhesive and a layer of the foam-like material being successively applied to the layer; the other layer of filling material then being applied so as to show a relief according to a predetermined pattern, a layer of adhesive and a layer of upstanding hairs being successively applied so that the free ends of the hairs show the same pattern as that of the layer of filling material. The foam-like material may consist of polymers prepared from cyanates and amines or glycols, e.g. polyurethane. The hairs may be fibres of synthetic material.
