ELECTRONIC PROGRAM GUIDE FOR TELEVISION

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system with which a plurality of television programs are displayed on a television receiver and a user can easily select one of them to view the selected program.

SOLUTION: A data processing section of the television receiver receives television program schedule information for the plurality of programs appearing on a plurality of television channels and stores the received information into a memory. A user control device is a remote controller, for example. A video display generator receives a video control command from a data processing device and program schedule information from the memory, overlays them on a television program appearing on a television channel in at least one mode of operation of the television program guide, and displays one part of the program schedule information. The data processing apparatus controls the video display generator based on the video control command to be issued in response to a user control command, and tunes the television receiver to the selected television channel.
