The template is ground to the form of a true epitrochoid, or of a curve parallel thereto, while the part of the template blank corresponding to the lobe 4 of the engine cylinder is kept at a temperature about 75‹ C. higher than the part corresponding to the lobe 2. During grinding of the cylinder, the template temperature is equalised, so that the lobe 4, which contains the exhaust port, is smaller than the lobe 2 to allow for thermal expansion when operating. [Also in Division G1] A gear finishing or gear testing machine intended for carrying out in a simplified manner the method described in Specifications 892,347 and 940,360 in which pairs of gears G, P are run together for finishing or testing comprises a housing 26 mounted on the frame 18 for journalling the spindle of the gear G and a housing 14 which journals the spindle of the gear P and is mounted on the frame 18 through the intermediary of a plate 17 angularly and translationally movable in a plane parallel to both spindles under the control of two sets of guide-and-follower elements 34, 35 (of which the elements 34 are carried by the frame and the elements 35 by the plate) which are arranged to determine a pivot axis 33 about which the plate may be oscillated. The effect of this mechanism is such as to produce a relative motion of the gears G, P equivalent to that described in the abovenumbered Specifications (namely the co-ordinated motions of relative reciprocation of the gears in the direction of their axes and simultaneous oscillatory motion of the gears about an axis 46 in the meshing zone to shift lengthwise of the tooth the bearing or contact area) by arranging only for an oscillatory motion of the gear P about the axis 33 which is spaced from and parallel to the axis 46. The plate 17 is supported on the horizontal plane surface 18 of the frame by anti-friction bearings 32, the guides 34 on the plate being held in contact with the rollers 35 on the frame structure by a spring-loaded plunger 37 secured to the plate at an angle bisecting that subtended by the lines 47, 48 intersecting at the axis 33 and joining the contacting points of the guides and rollers 34, 35. Angular adjustment of the guides 34 shifts the location of the axis 33 to alternative positions, such as 33<SP>1</SP> or 3311, the resultant shift of the axis 46 through an arc E being the equivalent of that produced by the combined motions of the machines of the prior Specifications. Hydraulically-operated piston means of the kind disclosed in Specification 940,360 is used for adjusting the guides 34, and the cam 42, which produces oscillation of the plate 17 by its action on a roller 43, is oscillated by a reversible motor controlled by the switching means described in that Specification to vary the angular motion of the cam on either side of the starting position.
