PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coating material for decorative building material, having quick drying property and excellent workability and accurately reproducing the form applied to a substrate. SOLUTION: The coating material for decorative building material to be applied to a building substrate contains hollow powder of acrylic copolymer and an aqueous dispersion of an acrylic acid ester-styrene copolymer. Examples of the building substrate are foamed polystyrene processed to a prescribed form, a material produced by spraying a lacquer thinner to the foamed polystyrene processed to a prescribed form to roughen the surface of the foamed polystyrene, and a material produced by applying a water-based coating material containing a sealer base composed mainly of an acrylic acid ester-styrene copolymer, portland cement and silica sand to the foamed polystyrene processed to a prescribed form.
