<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of setting a large angle at which an image reading unit is opened, and preventing the entire apparatus from loosing its balance when the image reading unit is opened. <P>SOLUTION: The image reading unit 12 is pivotally supported on the main body 1a of the image forming apparatus 1 so as to be vertically opened/closed. A restricting member 42 is provided to one end of a mounting frame 21a for the image reading unit 12. The upper end of the restricting member 42 is attached to the mounting frame 12a by a pivotal support pin 43 so that it is rotatable. A slide groove is formed in the middle of the restricting member 42 along the length of the restricting member 42. An engagement pin 44 provided to the main body 1a of the apparatus is slidably engaged with the slide groove. A plate spring is attached to the engagement pin.
