PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader capable of correcting mark intervals of a reference pattern even when the mark intervals can not be accurately obtained. SOLUTION: The reference pattern 50 is constituted by arranging three or more marks 51 in an array at equal intervals. A mark recognizing means 221 imparts mark numbers (m) to the respective recognized marks 51 in the read order, and pairs and store mark positions p(m) corresponding to the mark numbers (m) and pixel line numbers n(m) corresponding to the mark numbers (m) in a data storage area 212. A mark position estimating means 222 statistically processes pairs (p(m), n(m)) by using a method of least squares to find an approximate expression (regression line) y=A×x+B for approximately estimating the relation between the mark positions p(m) and pixel line numbers n(m).
