PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus capable of preventing an adverse effect on a reading operation of a carriage due to a contact between harness wires and motive power transmission members and avoiding the harness wires from being damaged due to a contact of the harness wires with an inner edge of an insertion hole of a sheet-metal-made chassis member. SOLUTION: In the image reading apparatus provided with the carriage movably supported along a guide rail 72 formed on the sheet-metal-made chassis member and scanning an image of an original on a platen glass, the power transmission members 56, 57 for delivering the motive power of a drive motor to the carriage, and the harness wires 45 wired from the insertion hole 40 provided to a side face 72d of the guide rail 72, a synthetic-resin-made wire protection cover 41 integrally formed with a cylindrical main body part 42 for covering the inner edge part 40a of the insertion hole 40 and an eaves part 43 projected from the main body part 42 in a manner of being extended between the harness wires 45 wired from the insertion hole 40 and the power transmission members 56, 57 is mounted to the insertion hole 40.
