A variable resistor includes a contact member rotatable with respect to an arcuate resistance element by means of a worm and wormwheel, the worm-wheel having two radiallyextending resilient members at the ends of a minor, toothless portion of its circumference, for engagement with abutment surfaces on a stationary member, whereby to limit the rotation of the wheel to less than 360 degrees, and ensure that if the worm is rotated beyond the permissible limit for the worm-wheel, the extending resilient members bend and disengage from the worm. The Specification describes the potentiometer disclosed in Figs. 1 to 5 of Specification 942,983, incorporating the stop mechanism disclosed in Figs. 11 and 12 of the same Specification.
