A phosphor containing oxides of alkaline earth metals and Group IIIB metals is provided to allow efficient emission of the yellow visible light (480-600nm) by being excited by the light ranging from the near UV to blue light, and to produce a light source having a high light emitting effect and high color rendering index. A phosphor comprises at least one oxide of alkaline earth metal selected from the group consisting of strontium, barium, calcium and a combination thereof, and at least one oxide of Group IIIB metal selected from the group consisting of aluminum, gallium, indium and a combination thereof, activated by at least one rare earth metal ion at least including europium, and is represented by the formula of (M1-xREx)yD2O4, wherein M is at least one alkaline earth metal; RE is a rare earth metal at least including europium; D is at least one Group IIIB metal; 0.001 < x < 0.3; and y satisfies a condition selected from 0.75<y<1 and 1<y<1.1. |
