PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for more industrially advantageously producing diols. SOLUTION: A method is provided for producing diols represented by formula (4) (wherein R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP>, and R<SP>4</SP>are as defined below) which comprises reducing with a reducing agentβ-hydroxyhydroperoxides represented by e.g., formula (2) (wherein R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP>, and R<SP>4</SP>, which may be the same or different from each other, are an optionally substituted alkyl group or the like, provided that R<SP>1</SP>and R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>1</SP>and R<SP>3</SP>, R<SP>2</SP>and R<SP>4</SP>, and R<SP>3</SP>and R<SP>4</SP>may be combined with each other in some of the pairs to form part or parts of the resultant ring structure or structures).
