PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an article inspecting apparatus, capable of realizing plural kinds of article inspections under different detection conditions which are carried out with high sensitivity, by using only a single unit of article inspecting apparatus. SOLUTION: A detecting section 2 near a detection area comprises a detector 21 for detecting electromagnetic waves or changes in magnetic field; a first signal processing means 22 for generating a first detection signal M1 corresponding to a first frequency component, based on the output of the detector 21; and a second signal processing means 23 for generating a second detection signal M2, corresponding to a second frequency component and differing from the detection signal M1, based on the output of a detector. A determining section 3, inputting the detection signals M1, M2 comprises, a first individual determining section 31 for generating a determination signal, representing whether a first part Pm1 showing a prescribed quality state exists in a work piece W, in response to the signal level of the detection signal M1; a second individual determining section 32 for generating a determination signal, representing whether a second part Pm2, showing a prescribed quality state, exists in the work piece W, in response to the signal level of the second detection signal M2; and a general determining section 33 for determining the quality state of the work piece W, based on both the determination signals.
