An apparatus and a method for reducing the complexity of detection in a multiple antenna system are provided to perform signal detection by enabling a transmitter to transmit plural streams through different modulation methods, and enabling a receiver to allocate a modulation method with a lowest order to the upper end of a tree, thereby reducing the complexity of tree searching and improving the performance. A generator performs the spatial multiplexing of transmission data and generates plural transmission streams. A determination unit(108) determines modulation methods to apply to each of the plural transmission streams. A modulation unit(102-1~102Nt) modulates and outputs the plural transmission streams through different modulation methods under the control of the determination unit.
