Shield straps (4) are interposed between the contact region (3) of a coating roller (2) and the surface of a web (1). An adjusting device (5) moves the straps in a direction perpendicular to the web running direction (D) so that the straps serially adjoin, space apart, or partly overlap with each other. At the adjoining positions, the straps block application of coating liquid from the roller to the web surface. The straps are also attached to installation clips (7).
