The device has clamps (12) for holding printing plant products (20,22) in a lateral edge area (28), such that the products form overlapping free border section (24). The device has two sensors (32,34). One sensor is designed for generating a specific detection signal as reference signal, if a clamp passes one of the sensors assigned to a reference area (38). The other sensor is arranged such that it generates another detection signal, if a section of a product passes through detection area (40) assigned to the sensor in a lateral edge area (29).
