The present invention is related to a method for treating patient suffering from peripheral nerve dysfunctions in the pelvic area due to neuropathy, diabetes mellitus, acute penile trauma, penile surgery, prostatic surgery, bladder surgery or any other pelvic surgery. The invention discloses the use of neurotrophic factors, such as and their conservatively substituted variants for production of medical products acting as trophic support for treating subjects suffering e.g. from above mentioned dysfunction, including but not restricted to erectile dysfunctions. The neurotrophic factors include the proteins, nucleotide sequences encoding the proteins, their receptors, binding substances and modulators.
