PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a composition for sealing materials that is transparent and exhibits excellent light resistance, and an optical device.

SOLUTION: The composition for sealing materials comprises a silsesquioxane compound having a silsesquioxane structure and containing no reactive groups other than a silanol group, where the silsesquioxane structure comprises a phenyl-silsesquioxane structure. The optical device is equipped with an optical element mounted on a substrate and a sealing material obtained by curing the composition for sealing materials that covers the optical element.
