The device (1) has a gas cushion (10) housed in a case (14) and inflated when activated by a gas provoked from a gas generator fixed on the case. A control element (18) e.g. guard strip, is engaged on the gas cushion and connects a rear envelope and a front envelope of the gas cushion. The control element forces the cushion to extend in the shape of arc from the case until a free output end (17) of the cushion when the cushion is in a deployed state.
