The method for operating an internal combustion engine (3) in at least two different operating modes is carried out in such a way that during operating in one operating mode, and at least during a change into another operating mode, control of the internal combustion engine is carried out in dependence upon a recorded actual torque. Control of the internal combustion engine during the changeover of operating modes is carried out in dependence upon a relative torque which is determined as a difference of the nominal torque and actual torque. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) a control unit (2) for controlling and governing an operation of an internal combustion engine, which has means to carry out the method; (2) a vehicle (1) with means of carried out the method; and (3) a computer programme which runs on a computer, especially on a control unit for controlling and governing an internal combustion engine.
