The method involves supplying combustion air to a combustion chamber by a gas exchange unit in a cylinder head. The combustion air forms charging burning during the ignition in the combustion chamber along with supplied fuel. The cylinder pressure and combustion temperature develops by the combustion in the combustion chamber. The combustion temperature is determined as average of gas temperature depending on the cylinder pressure, volume of the combustion chamber and the measure of the charging. The combustion temperature is determined with homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI).
