PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve high-speed forward reproduction and high-speed backward reproduction and to shorten time required for detecting stream data not registered by registering the stream data not registered in hierarchical management information in the hierarchical management information to prevent erroneous display of total reproduction time. SOLUTION: A recording medium 170 is accessed through an external interface 160. When stream data not registered in hierarchical management information are detected, a system controller 180 controls a CODEC 140 to create management information concerning the stream data, and registers the stream data and the created management information in the hierarchical management information.
