PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus which is available in a reading mode during which two-sided images of a stacked document can be continuously read, and a reading mode during which pages of a book or a large-sized document can be read, and which is improved in portability and convenience by selectively using the plurality of reading modes. SOLUTION: The image reading apparatus includes a first reading mode during which a document P1 is scanned and read by a reading unit 2, and a second reading mode during which both sides of a document P2 fed from a document stacking section 3 are read by a stationary reading unit 5 and the reading unit 2. The reading unit 2 is provided in a flat-type reading section 6 which is attachable to and detachable from an apparatus body, the reading unit 2 comprises a USB terminal 21, and the flat-type reading section, when detached from the apparatus body, can be used as a flatbed scanner.
