PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic disk glass substrate which is reduced in micro-waviness formation which occurs when the substrate is cooled after a chemical reinforcement step in its production method including the chemical reinforcement step to thereby realize both the prevention of troubles such as head crash and thermal asperity and reduction in the flying height of a magnetic head and is desirably used for high-density information magnetic disks, especially small magnetic disks for mobile information devices. SOLUTION: In a cooling step following a chemical reinforcement step, a melt formed by melting a substance which can solidify into a glassy material is applied to the surface of a glass substrate before its temperature is lowered. This makes it possible to lower the temperature of the glass substrate to a predetermined temperature without crystallizing a chemically reinforcing salt on the surface of the glass substrate.
