PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a spark ignition internal combustion engine having two ignition plugs, which realizes the excellent homogeneous combustion of the high combustion speed. SOLUTION: An in-cylinder space formed by a cylinder head and a piston in the terminal stage of the compression stroke has a first portion s1 and a second portion s2. The first portion is narrow, and the second portion is wider than the first portion. A first ignition plug 2a with an ignition gap being located therein, and a second ignition plug 2b with an ignition gap being located in a vicinity of a boundary between the first portion and the second portion, are provided in the first portion. In the homogeneous combustion, the second ignition plug is ignited immediately after igniting the first ignition plug, and a mixed gas in the first portion is ignited by the first ignition plug. Then, a mixed gas flow is ejected from the first portion to the second portion, the arc A generated in the ignition gap of the second ignition plug is expanded by the mixed gas flow into the second portion, and the mixed gas in the second portion is ignited thereby.
