<p>To determine the ambient air pressure, the engine is run initially under loading, with turbocharging (6). During a negative loading transient, when engine control reverts from turbocharged to non-charged or suction operation, the charging pressure (PUT) is measured (8), recording its profile over time. From this profile, the current ambient pressure is determined. Charging is induced by throttle valve (10) opening and/or by turbine bypass valve (23) adjustment; suction operation is induced by throttle closure.
