The method involves illuminating an area of a roadway (2) up to a specific distance by transmitting an electromagnetic radiation in a driving direction (3) before a vehicle (1). Parts of the electromagnetic radiation reflected from the area are received by a receiver and are undergone to an evaluation with respect to a detectable object (7). The distance of the object to the vehicle is determined, and a hazard potential is derived with respect to the driving operation to influence correspondingly on a driver assistance system during detection of the object. An independent claim is also included for a device for detection and identification of objects on a roadway.
