PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an external electrode discharge lamp capable of lowering a discharge start voltage, having a stable positive column A, and causing less flicker of emission luminance. SOLUTION: In this external electrode discharge lamp, a longitudinal length L is greater than a lateral width W and a vertical height H; a low-pressure discharge gas is filled in a flat discharge tube 1 at least flat in both upper and lower flat walls 1a, 1a; and, at both upper and lower ends of the flat discharge lamp 1, main electrodes 5, 5 covering at least the upper and lower flat walls 1a, 1a at the ends and right and left sidewalls 1b, 1b are respectively arranged. The external electrode discharge lamp is structured such that thin strip-like auxiliary electrodes 6, 6 connected to the respective main electrodes 5 are respectively arranged on partial parts on the outside surfaces of the upper and lower flat walls 1a, 1a between the one-side main electrode 5 and the other-side main electrode 5.
