In a lawn-mower of the kind comprising a power-driven vertical shaft 7 carrying a rotary-scythe cutter 15 and an air-impeller 12, the cutter and impeller being surrounded by a housing 1 with a cut-grass discharge shoot 16, the lower boundary 6 of the housing is continuous and uniplanar so as to restrict the escape of air between housing and ground during operation. As shown in Fig. 2 the mover is wheel-less and rests upon an air-cushion produced by the impeller 12 which has an air-intake 5 at the top of the housing. The shoot 16 curves rearwardly and upwardly and receives a gauze bag on its rear end. Removable shims 9, 10 are arranged on. the. shaft 7 for adjusting the cutting height. In a modification, (Fig. 3, not shown) the housing is wheeled and a pendant rubber skirt seals the area between the housing and the ground, so that the weight of the machine is reduced although the machine is not fully supported.
