The device has managing units, each causing the usage of ATM lines (LA1) connected to a gateway (P1) to be stopped, such that an optical ATM switch uses ATM lines (LA2) connected to an initially standby gateway (P2). The unit orders Ethernet line protection units to place an active gateway (P1) in a standby state and a standby gateway (P2) in an active state if the units have not already placed the gateways in their respective states. The management unit stops the utilization in case of a problem of transfer of the IP data between an equipment (NS) and the switch (XC), via the initially active gateway (P1).
