A window is moved vertically by a rack and pinion mechanism in which the spring is given an initial tensioning. Vertical racks (not shown) on the window, engage with pinions 15 attached to the ends of a rod 11 secured to a fixed horizontal window frame member 10, and a coil spring 17 around the rod has bushes 21, 20 attached to its ends, bush 21 being held relative to the member 10 by an integral tooth 23 running in a groove 25 of the member 10, the rod being free to rotate through this bush, whereas the bush 20 is fixed relative to the rod 11 but is free to rotate with the rod. The device is tensioned by sliding the dog tooth bushes 31 out of engagement with bush 20 and lowering the window so tensioning spring 17, and in this position the dog-tooth bushes 31 are brought into engagement with bush 20 and are locked to the fixed member 10 by screws 35, and so in turn lock bush 20 relative to this member. Screw 22 can now be removed allowing the rod to turn freely through all the bushes and the window is returned to its uppermost position, the operation being completed by replacing the screw 22 so locking the bush 20 to the rod, and sliding the dog-tooth bushes 31 out of engagement with bush 20. In this way the tension in the spring may be set to the required amount to hold the window. |
