PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a charger, capable of preventing an electric spark when a built-in power source is connected to the charger, without having to add special circuits or configurations to the charger. SOLUTION: In response to the connection of a commercial power source to an inlet 17 of the charger 30, it is determined whether batteries 36, 37 connected to connectors 34, 35 for a battery are in a chargeable state. If they are in the chargeable state, the current output from the connectors 34, 35 for a battery is brought into a standby state for a predetermined time (e.g. about 5 seconds).
