A method and an apparatus for operating a backlight in a liquid crystal display element are provided to block voltage supply automatically when an error is generated while operating lamps of a liquid crystal display apparatus, thereby preventing human body due from being damaged due to error. An apparatus for operating a backlight in a liquid crystal display element comprises the following units: an operation state detecting unit(308) for converting AC(Alternating Current) voltage which is generated by phase difference between slave AC voltage and master AC voltage into analog DC(Direct Current) voltage; a protection control unit(311) for generating an enable signal or an operation error signal according to determination result by determining error generation of lamps; and a lamp operation control unit(301) for normally operating the master driver and slave driver in response to an enable signal from the protection control unit or for stopping an operation of the master driver and slave driver in response to an operation error signal from the protection control unit. |
