摘要 <p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem wherein the number of codes increases when preparing the coding stream of moving pictures for each color depth. <P>SOLUTION: An encoder 200 gives pixel depth scalability to the moving picture for encoding in a hierarchy. An upper-bit acquisition section 150 allocates upper bit planes having a prescribed number of bits and all bit planes in a plurality of bit planes giving information on the color of a picture to a basic layer and an expansion one, respectively. A basic layer encoder 100 performs the motion estimation encoding of a basic upper bit plane. A bit shift 102 shifts image data after the quantization of the basic layer to the left for giving to an expansion layer encoder 110. The expansion layer encoder 110 computes the difference between the image data after the quantization of the expansion layer and those after the quantization of the basic layer in which bits are shifted to the left, and then performs variable-length encoding to the differential data to generate the encoding data of the expansion layer. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT</p>
