PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an eyepiece that has a large exit pupil diameter and facilitates observation while exhibiting high imaging performance despite its more compact configuration. SOLUTION: The eyepiece includes, in order from the object side to the exit pupil side, a first lens group G1 composed of a positive lens L1, a second lens group G2 composed of a negative lens L2, and a third lens G3 composed of a positive lens L3. The eyepiece satisfies conditional formula (1) that defines the appropriate range of a principal point interval PP. This shortens a distance from an object to the exit pupil and exhibits satisfactory aberration performance. Further, since the exit pupil diameter is large enough while tele-centricity on the object side is ensured, the eyepiece is suitable for observing a liquid crystal surface that has high directivity.
