A forced breathing apparatus, for artificial respiration, has an atomizer for medicaments &c. comprising a supersonic vibrator and liquid supply means, connected into the high pressure branch of the system. In the apparatus described a piston 2, reciprocated in a cylinder 1, provides the necessary pressure changes and, in moving towards the right compresses a bag 7 to force air through pipe 11, carbon dioxide absorber 15 and atomizer 61 to the lungs 20. On the reverse stroke of the piston the bag 7 is distended and withdraws air from the lungs through an air drier 22, non-return valve 26, pipes 37, 36 and valve 31. A bladder 38 serves as a form of accumulator and any additional air required is drawn in through a valve 43. If the system is to be operated on open circuit, the plug valve 40 is turned to close pipe 37 and to connect chamber 24 with a venturi arrangement 50 in which the air displaced by the piston on the return stroke is employed to assist in the withdrawal of air from the lungs. In the atomizer, liquid from a supply flask 80 drips from a tube 88 through a funnel 91 on to a plate 73 vibrated supersonically by a piezo-electric device 72. This causes it to be broken up into a fine mist which is carried away by the air entering at 69 and passing to the lungs at 70. A baffle 95 catches any relatively large droplets, which may be splashed up, and directs them back on to the vibrating plate 73. In two modified forms of the atomizer the supply of liquid is held in a container within the walls of the atomizer and in one of these the container is removable for convenience in refilling. A further type of atomizer uses a concave vibrating plate placed in the based of the chamber so that violent motion caused at its focus are located at the surface of liquid placed in the container and air flowing over the surface carries away the resulting mist. In each case suitable means prevents the liquid being forced back by the gas pressure. |
