<p>A method of reinforcing a seam 10 in a garment or other textile article comprises adhering a layer of substantially unidirectionally extensible elastic material along the length of the seam 10 such that the material straddles the seam and the direction of extensibility is aligned with the elongate direction C of seam 10. The seam may be stitched and/or ultrasonically or adhesively bonded. The elastic material may be a strip 30 secured by hot melt or pressure adhesive or by fusible yarns woven or knit into the strip, such that the strip to each side of the seam is adhered to the textile. The strip preferably includes elastic woven or knitted warp yarns which allow stretch of the strip along the seam and inelastic weft yarns which resist extension in the width direction. This allows the strip to protect the seam form forces which would otherwise tend to pull it apart. The strip may be applied to the seam in a tensioned state along at least part of the seam such that on release of the tension a ruched effect is produced. The strip may be located inside a garment for comfort or outside for decorative effect.</p> |
