A mobile terminal having a touch pad is provided to enable a user to make a fun visually and make a mobile terminal compact by including a touch pad on an outer surface of the terminal instead of keys used in a pressing manner. A display unit(130) provides various corresponding information and user interfaces. A touch pad(170) inputs a tactile type key input by a user. A controller(180) controls each element and performs a corresponding function according to an input to the touch pad(170). The controller(180) activates or deactivates the touch pad(170) according to a state of a mobile terminal or an external input. When the mobile terminal is opened, the controller(180) activates the touch pad(170), and when the mobile terminal is closed, the controller(180) deactivates the touch pad(170). When a certain external function key is inputted in a closed state of the mobile terminal, the controller(180) activates the touch pad(170).
