PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve both high medium SNR and superior OW characteristic simultaneously by combining a magnetic head with shield with a vertical magnetic recording medium suited thereto. SOLUTION: A vertical magnetic recording medium with a three-layer recording layer is used as the vertical magnetic recording medium of a magnetic storage device wherein a magnetic head with shield is mounted. A first recording layer 37 has a granular structure comprising a grain boundary layer that contains columnar particles made of Co Cr Pt alloy and oxide, and a second recording layer 38 and a third recording layer 39 are formed thereon. The second and third recording layers 38 and 39 contain Co as a main component and Cr, and no oxide, and the concentration of Cr of the second recording layer is lower than that of the third recording layer.
