The dishwasher has cleaning chambers (12, 14) with a dosing device for dispensing the amount of cleaning agent for cleaning items. The amount of agent to be dispensed is selected depending on the transportation speed of a conveying device, which carries the items. The dosing device has a controller for measuring concentration of agent in water and controlling an output unit of the dosing device for regulating the concentration to a desired value. The output unit increases the amount of agent with increasing speed depending on a clock impulse of a clock generator of the transporting device. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating an automatic dishwasher.
