PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect gear jumping in the transfer mechanism of an optical pickup. SOLUTION: The optical pickup 310 is transferred in the radial direction of an optical disk 10 by a stepping motor 100. A control part 330 which receives a seek operation instruction from a host device drives the stepping motor 100 through a controller 340 and seeks the optical pickup 310 to a target address. The amount of difference between a present address after seeking and a the target address is calculated, and when the amount of difference is equal to or larger than the pitch P of the transfer mechanism, that is, the pitch P of a lead screw, the occurrence of a gear jumping is judged, a seek condition is changed and seeking is executed again.
