<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and controller capable of supplying exact gray level of an electro-optic display without requiring frequent flashing a solid color on a display. <P>SOLUTION: In this method, bistable electro-optic display has a plurality of pixels and each pixel can display at least three gray levels. The display is driven by a method comprising: storing a lookup table including data expressing impulse required for converting the initial gray level into the last gray level; storing data expressing at least the initial state of each pixel of the display and generating an output signal expressing the impulse required for converting the initial state of at least one pixel of the display into the desired last state so as to be determined from the lookup table. The display is an electrophoretic display or a closed electrophoretic display.
