PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an imaging apparatus and method for automatically continuing a ranging operation of a photographic area in a macro photography mode when a subject is in a macro area in a normal photography mode. SOLUTION: An AF evaluation value is acquired by scanning the photographic area in the normal photography mode and whether the maximum level of the AF evaluation value is out of the photographic area is determined. When it is determined that the maximum level is out of the photographic area, an additional scanning area in the macro area is determined by AF evaluation value information. Then, AF processing is restarted in the added macro area. In addition, it is determined that the maximum level is within the photographic area, a focal lens is transferred to a position where the AF evaluation value becomes maximum to judged whether or not it is in such a state that ranging is possible. When it is in such a state that the ranging is possible, the AF processing is continued and when it is in such a state that the ranging is impossible, the focal lens is transferred to a focal position in the normal case.
