A mobile terminal comprises a plurality of configurable modules and a memory means operable to store at least a first template representing aspects of a communications protocol. A template interpreting module is operable to configure and control those of said configurable modules required in accordance with said at least first template. Consequently, in use one or more communication protocols are implemented by the configuration and control of said configurable modules in accordance with said at least first template.
