IMAGE DECODING METHOD AND IMAGE DECODER

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image decoding method and an image decoder, which are capable of restoring a decoded image reduced in deterioration even when the error is occurred.

SOLUTION: The image is decoded by a method wherein the encoded data is decoded in the unit of block and block strain, generated in a boundary between the decoded blocks, is smoothed employing a deblocking filter. A variable length decoding unit VLD carries out an error detecting step for detecting the existence or not of error included in the decoded data while the deblocking filter DBF carries out a determining step for determining whether the filtering is effected employing which one of a plurality of deblocking filters different in smoothness and whether the filtering is to be effected or not with respect to a boundary between the block and a neighbored block in accordance whether the error has been detected or not with respect to respective blocks.
