PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a combined gear change and brake control unit for a bicycle. SOLUTION: This combined unit comprises a support member 12 which can be fastened to the handlebar of the bicycle, a brake control lever 14 mounted on the support member 12 so as to be pivotally turnable around a first axis 16, and a gear change control unit 18 connected to the support member 12. The control unit 18 comprises a shaft 20 pivotally turnable around a second axis 22 orthogonal to or substantially orthogonal to the first axis 16. The gear change control unit 18 comprises a ratchet mechanism comprising a gear 26 firmly fastened to the shaft 20 and a meshing unit 28. The meshing unit 28 is connected to a connecting member 36 rotatably around the second axis 22. The combined unit further comprises a gear change lever 58 operatively associated to the ratchet mechanism 26, 28 for controlling the rotation of the shaft 20 around the second axis 22.
